Press Release16 October 2003Western Cape is not currently experiencing a blood shortage Thanks to the loyal blood donors of the Western Cape, the WP Blood Transfusion Service is not short of blood as is currently the case in the rest of the country. SABC TV and Radio have reported critical shortages, particularly in KZN. There are currently two blood transfusion services: SA National Blood Transfusion Service (SANBS) comprising of the Inland Region and the East Coast Region (KZN, PE and East London) and then WP Blood Transfusion Service (Western Cape). Although these two services operate separately from one another, WPBTS regards Blood as a national resource and has offered their assistance to other regions on a number of occasions in the past. Yesterday 400 units of blood were dispatched to KZN, the area which is suffering the worst of the crisis. If needed, we can supply them further. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the loyal blood donors of the Western Cape for their regular and much-appreciated blood donations. While we're not running any extra clinics at present, we urge people to continue donating regularly as usual, particularly the much-needed group O donors. Issued by:
