World Blood Donor DayWorld Blood Donor Day is celebrated annually on 14th June. This special day gives us the opportunity to give thanks to those very special people who provide the foundation for a safe blood supply: our blood donors. The day also commemorates the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the Nobel Prize winner who discovered the ABO blood groups system. The theme ("and I save lives") focusses on the fact that any healthy person can be a life saver by being a blood donor. This year WP Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) and South Africa National Blood Service (SANBS) joined hands with CHOC, Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa. On 14th June blood donors in various centres countrywide were given the opportunity to meet children who suffer from cancer. In the Cape such an event was hosted at Tygergerg Hospital, where donors visited the wards and brought cake, balloons and gift packs to the children. Thanks to Prof. Wessels and the staff of Tygerberg Hospita's G3 Onchology Unit, it was a wonderful opportunity for donors to meet some of the regular recipients of blood/blood products. In the Cape 700 units of blood are needed daily to meet the requirements of the hospitals. WPBTS would like to thank everyone who made a special effort to give blood on World Blood Donor Day. Without regular blood donations, we would never be able to help the people who rely on us daily.
