Press Release

5 September 2006
Blood Challenge at CTICC on Tuesday 5 September.

As a result of a severe blood shortage experienced in Western Province, the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) hosted a blood donor clinic on Tuesday 05 September.

The CEO of CTICC, Mr D. Elzinga and Ms J. Myburgh (Cairman: Cape Town Chamber of Commerce) lent their support by giving blood. The clinic was very successful with 125 units of blood collected, including a total of 77 new donors recruited.

WP Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) would like to thank CTICC for their support and all donors who made a special effort during the blood shortage.

"Currently it seems that we are experiencing a period of increased blood usage. We are monitoring the usage closely to establish whether it will become a trend", said Mr. Graham Thurtell, manager of Promotions, PR and Planning of WPBTS.

At the beginning of the week of 04 September WPBTS was severely short of blood supply, with a total of about 1.5 days supply left in the Province. After the appeal and a number of extra clinics, the blood stocks were pushed up to a more satisfactory level. In order to maintain adequate levels of supply, blood donors should give blood regularly.
