Press Release

2 October 2006
Changes in donor deferral periods.

As part of a general review of the donor questionnaire and donor deferral criteria, WP Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) has introduced new deferral criteria since 02 October 2006. These changes result from discussions between SA National Blood Service (SANBS) and WP Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS). Due to the introduction of new DNA-based technology (NAT) at the end of last year, the window periods for detection of transmissable viruses such as Hepatitis and HIV can be shortened significantly.

As a result the deferral periods for the following blood donors have been changed: recipients of blood components, stabbing victims, tattoos, body piercing and scarification. These are all being shortened to six months (from the original 12 month deferral periods). Furthermore,as part of this ongoing review of deferral criteria and the donor questionnaire, the period of exclusion for male-to-male sex (MSM) has also be shortened from five years to six months.

WPBTS requests all donors to be patient while the changes are introduced. We would also like to stress how vital it is that donors answer the questionnaire honestly. The lives of blood recipients can be placed at risk in the event of untruthful answers.
