Press Release

29 March 2007
Western Cape blood supplies in good shape despite national shortage.

The Western Province Blood Transfusion Service's (WPBTS) blood supply is currently at satisfactory levels and plans are in place to boost donations over the Easter holiday period to cope with increased demand.

The Western Cape requires approximately 600-700 donations each day which are used in the production of various transfusable components.

According to Graham Thurtell, spokesperson for the WPBTS, the organisation's target is 792 units for each five to seven day cycle. Supplies currently stand at 717 units with stocks from three regional clinics in Paarl, Worcester and George expected to make up the shortfall by tomorrow morning (Friday, 30 March 2007).

"Thanks to our donors our blood supply is on target to meet this demand but we do call them to attend the clinics planned for the next couple of weeks," said Thurtell.

The Western Province Blood Transfusion Service is an organisation that operates independently of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and provides blood and blood products for the Western Cape province.
