Press Release

18 April 2007
Blood donors urged to donate at Freedom Day weekend clinics to prevent shortage

The Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) will host special donation clinics in Somerset West and Claremont on Saturday, 28 April 2007 to alleviate pressure on blood supplies over the Freedom Day long weekend

The clinics are essential to ensure sufficient supply of blood over the weekend and for the production of platelets, used for the treatment of leukaemia and other bleeding disorders. Platelets must be harvested within eight hours of donation and expire only five days after collection.

During holiday times the normal collection of blood and related products is disrupted as many regular donors go away on holiday.

Donors and prospective donors are welcome at the clinics but the WPBTS urges them to be unconditionally honest on their donor questionnaire as one inaccurate or false answer could jeopardise the lives of a number of recipients.

Any person older than 17 years, weighing more than 50kg and who leads healthy lifestyle (sexual and otherwise) can donate blood.
